Limewire itself is not illegal. It's just a program that connects one or more computers together. There are legal uses for it, but if you choose to download copyrighted material this is what I found:
The "No Electronic Theft Law" (NET Act) is similar on copyright violations that involve digital recordings:
Criminal penalties can run up to 5 years in prison and/or $250,000 in fines, even if you didn’t do it for monetary or financial or commercial gain.
If you did expect something in return, even if it just involves swapping your files for someone else’s, as in MP3 trading, you can be sentenced to as much as 5 years in prison.
Regardless of whether you expected to profit, you’re still liable in civil court for damages and lost profits of the copyright holder.
Or the copyright holders can sue you for up to $150,000 in statutory damages for each of their copyrighted works that you illegally copy or distribute.

No... Limewire is only the software used to connect pcs to each other. Limewire does not do the actual transferring of material. The ppl distributing the copywrit material are the ones that could be held liable, not Limewire.
Also, there is a disclaimer that each Limewire user agrees to when using the software... that you agree not to share copywrit material.
So you see, Limewire is perfectly legal.

OK, first, it is most definitely illegal to download anything copywrighted from limewire. second, if the authorities found your downloads you could be in tons of trouble. just how much you would have to pay or how much time you would spend in jail would depend on the case.

LimeWire is legal because the downloaded songs must be used for personal enjoyment only and not for sale.

Copyright infringement?
Depends on how much the person(s) with the copyright can get the judge to hit you for damages.
The quick answer? Yeah you can be in a whole heap of trouble.. imprisonment, fines, or both...

If you're downloading copyrighted material then it is illegal. You can be prosecuted for doing so for even one song.
