The basic approach is to first develop a hypothesis and then test it. You should keep one variable fixed,e.g. the type of oil stain and then test a variety of detergents.

Not just different brands, but detergents with different additives, e.g. with enzymes, with bleach, etc. Then compare.

You could try a variety of oil stains with a variety of detergents and develop a matrix of observations.

Create the same oil stain with the same amount of oil for each test I.e a thimble full for each.

if you are going to test a veriety of different detergents you should be set to go. I would use plain water to set as a standard, something acidic, such as lemon juice, and something basic such as washing up liquid. Though how you will be able to justify the results without knowing the pH will be slightly more difficult.

An easier option would be to test how the varying concentration of one specific detergent affects how much oil is removed from your samples. To make your solutions, use water as a standard, and regular increacements of detergent diluted to a set amount I.e. 10 ml water/ 0ml detergent; 2ml detergent/8ml water; 4ml detergent/ 6ml water; .........10ml detergent/ 0ml water

If you have enough time you could run both experiments to demonstrate how pH and concentration impact on the ability of a detergent to remove oil from a sample.

When it comes to detergent, it is best to look at Tide as America's Best!!

im not quite sure it matters but put the title @ the top, problem hypothesis and experiment on the left, results and conclusion on the right, and your data and pics in the middle.

Hope this helps!
