Why does everybody think slavery did it? Yeah, it contributed, but white and black people were making babies together before slavery. And people of all races are mixing together as I type this answer... I have a black friend who's married to an Irish/ Indian guy. We're all mixed up... Even if someone appears all the way white, black or what have you; if you look back on their family tree other races will be in it.

First of all, not all Africans are the same complection or have the same features. Africa is a big continent and the people there have a variety of completions and features. Northern Africans have lighter skin and western Africans have sharper features. Secondly, everyone knows that during slavery the slave owners frequently raped their female slaves, both for sexual gratification and to increase the numbers of slaves that they owned. Obviously, this resulted in slaves with a variety of skin tones. Third, what exactly are "white" features? I am brown and I have often been accused by ignorant white people of having "white" features even though I am obviously black. This is usually followed by the equally ignorant comment of "But you can't be 'all' black. You look 'different'". Yes, both of my parents are black, although I am the darkest person in the family, which wigs people out even further. And no, since I am obviously black, it is therefore impossible for me to have "white" features. This question is sort of like asking why white people have such a diversity of features and coloring. People are people. It happens.

Come on dude, where have you been? In America there was slavery, within slavery there were mixing of the races between blacks, white, native Americans. Mostly white men raped or had extramarital affairs with the black slave women. That's how high yella blacks like myself were created. Does that answer your question?

In slavery times, it was common for the slave master to have sex with the black slaves, and produce light-skinned children. Well, the complexions carried and started to vary.

Racial inbreeding...when slavery was the norm of the day...usually only the men of a nation were transported at first...so the inbred with the culture that captured them and the nations of peoples they met on the way...there are no pure races anymore...and the new DNA studies show we all come from the aboriginal tribes of Australia...so look out for freckles!
