The same thing is said (quite rightly) about Michael Moore, usually by those right-wing commentators who fail to realise that obesity is a working-class epidemic in the US (though this applies to neither Gore nor Moore). For most of Western history, only the rich have been fat. Now, in urban America, it is the rich who can afford to be thin. There's a tragic irony in here somewhere.
