there are a number of different types of feminists
liberal feminists - general want equal rights for women and men
extreme feminists (cant remember exact name) - general want a matriarchal society and down and out with the men
black feminists - want rights for black women first and formost
marxist feminists - want a communist society with equal treatment of men and women
and many more.....
personally i believe women should be valued as individuals, as should men.
there are many so-called feminist icons including Madonna (revolutionalisation of female sexualality) and Margaret Thatcher (first female Prime Minister UK)
However i think these two in particular are over-rated.
First of all Madonna made her mark through what i would consider sexual expliotation by men and for men, she is more of a male triumph than a feminist success.
Second of all, Thatcher denied women as a sex when she came to power and saw herself as a 'man'. Thus completely devaluing her rise to supposal success by the mere fact she denounced the rest of us for being women.
Then you also have the words around feminism -
Female - male with a 'f''e' in front of it - why not a completely different word
woman/women - man/men with 'wo' in front of it - again why not our own word?
Then their is the burning of the bra in the 60s/70s - anless you have small bossums, bras are general a good support saving or lessening the back pain women with larger bests suffer from
Why must women be forced by men to denounce being a woman? not to have children and to only have a career - when men do both?
That is what feminism is - fighting for what you as a woman feels you are loosing, feel you are being denied.
To fight for equal pay instead of only 70p to every pound a man earns that is feminism
to demand that female sports personalities get paid the same as their male counterparts that is feminism
to believe that you and i as women have a right to what is only fair and equal treatment, that is feminism,
and if you believe you are being done injustice for being female then you are a feminist.
hope this helps. Good Luck. x x

start off a person who belive in equal rights for everyone is called Egalitarian, a feminst soley belives that women and men are the same or equals.
Some have a mindset that assumes almost everything is against women insome way, typical traits are a lack of understanding history suggest that all men lived in ivory towers instead of reality where women had all most no responisibltys protected from a lot of violence I.e if you raped a women it was very common for a male relative to stick 4 feet of steel throught your chest or that men never got sent into coal mines or to battlefields but instead sat at home all day so there women could look after them all day.
Two unable to accept any theory that disagress with their ideology because being a women means that are not subject to everyday human faliacy.
Fortunalty most feminist like this are pretty rare, gloria stienman is a good exsample of this type of behaviour.

Most people here forgot to say WAS a movement promoting equal rights for women.
NOWADAYS feminism is nothing more than the idea of women being superior in all categories to male and males being useless inferior butish idiots. Nowadays feminists want more rights than men. Some might want the same rights but do not want the same consequences and responsibilities that come with such rights. Let me ask you this: if feminists REALLY promote EQUALITY for each gender, then why are they called feminists?
I know it may not sound like a big deal, but then again they get offended when you say mankind or other such words. Íf you watch TV you can easily see how the men are always idiots in movies and commercials. They blame men for everything bad that happened in the past and today, but when a man makes a great invention they say a woman helped him.
In short modern feminists have a twisted sence of equality. I could give you a million more examples, if you want more examples you can just ask.

A feminist is someone who wants equal rights and responsibilities for both genders. Weak men do find this frightening and like to think feminists are all unattractive men haters. Real men often find feminists attractive because we tend to be independent and confident about ourselves. I certainly haven't had any complaints.

A feminist is in one sense similar to a civil rights activist: fighting a battle that has already been won.

Someone who at the forefront of feminism:-
Has a gender identity problem.
Thinks that males and females should be as interchangeable as possible, particularly in the workplace.
Thinks that males and females should compete with each other, and not complement each other.
At the extreme, someone who's nurture/nature has pre-disposed them to devote their lives to undermining men in as many different ways as possible.
Regards women as victims, and will busy themselves finding new ways to have women labelled as victims.
Undermines traditional marriage, and promotes alternative relationships, particularly single parenthood.
Promotes "the woman's choice" as regards abortion.
Promotes "man not needed" pregnancy through sperm donation.
Promotes adoption for lesbian couples.
Masquerades under the guise of doing all this for the benefit of men as well as women. What a lie, and it is also patronising, because men haven't asked for it to be done on their behalf, and if you look at many of their initiatives, they clearly don't benefit men. Any man who believes this lie, really is a fool.
THE ABOVE LIST IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE.

its an ideology that believes men and women should be equal in all aspects of life. it also states that stereotyping of women isnt correct since most women arent in the house any more (which is good). there are quite a few feminist punk bands out there, all really good.

A person who fights for the equality of women, or their percieved need for equality. You would do better asking "what is a feminist today?" or "what were the founding principles of feminism?"
