There is a kit available in WalMart's craft department with the knitting needle supplies. It is called "I Taught Myself Knitting." It is very basic, easy to understand, and comes complete with several needles and other supplies. The book also contains about 10 different projects ranging from a simple hat and scarf to an afghan and sweater. It is a great value for the money.

When beginning to knit, stay away from the specialty yarn. There are many free knitting patterns on the Internet. Just go to any search engine and type "free knitting patterns." Also, there are many sites for the beginning knitter. Just go do a simple search.

Yes, when I started knitting, I had very little money to go out and buy a new set of needles every other project. I found denise interchangeable knitting needles that work as both circular and straight needlesn and you can customize the length. I think it is a great buy and nifty. I saved up and was able to purchase it for $50 on the site and I still prefer to use my denise kit rather than straight needles.

Oh and never be afriad to try something new or challenging. I just mustered the courage to try knitting with four needles and I am in love with it, last week I tried embellishments. If you don't venture out and have fun then you can become bored and start recreating the same projects over and over.

I've been a knitter for about 30 years, it helps keep my hands busy while watching TV. I enjoy learning new techniques and learning what younger people are doing with a pair of needles and some yarn. One of my favorite magazines is Knit.1 published by Vogue. Also, this site is really fun http://knittaplease.com/
