I'd like to think that I keep my spouse happier than anyone else could but if I wasn't I would understand. I would be hurt but I would still understand as long as they hadn't cheated.

Sometimes people think that something else will make them happier, and then they realize that they had it all and gave it up. If your spouse feels like someone else would make them happier, I MAY step aside with the satisfaction that one day they could come crawling back and I will have moved on. On the other hand, I can't answer this honestly because I have never been in this situation, and sometimes we let emotions take control of our sense, and we try to hold on, deperately begging them to reconsider... So it depends on how long you have been begging or if you are just at a point where there is nothing else to do but step down...

answers like this are annoying:
"I wouldn't have married him if I thought someone could make him happier then I do. "
Many people marry each other for all kinds of reasons, so that is stupid. Sometimes people are not quite mature yet or sometimes people change and they change into a type of person that might want something totally different than what their spouse could possibly offer.
it's a very tough question. on one hand, I would have a very hard time seeing my spouse with someone else... it would just tear me appart, even though we've had so many dissagreements and we're really not the best match for each other in many ways. I definitelly wouldn't step aside unless I knew for sure that is what she wants and it makes her happy.
If she initiated it, I would have to let her go, but I wouldn't ever push her into something like that.
Then there's the issue of the fact that life is not primarily about "happiness". Americans have got it all wrong... everybody seems to be so concerned about their personal happiness. Well, life is primarily about doing what God wants you to do, and playing your part in the "grand schema", the symphony of life.
Also, as a Christian, I would be causing her to commit adultery if I actually encouraged something like that... but at the same time, I can't force her to stay if she isn't happy.
AND then there's the issue of children. What would it do to our kids for us to split up? I can assure you my kids would be completely devastated. We're a very close family, and you can tell me what you want about kids being resilient... I'd be willing to bet that my kids would be scarred for life by such an event. So it's not something I would take lightly.

Happiness is such an important part of life. Without loving yourself and having true happiness how can you have anything else?
I think that if you know true happiness would be your spouse with another person then you must know that your spouse no longer has the love for you to survive a loving and honest relationship. Let it go if that is where it is at, if you are just thinking these things and don't know for sure...don't do anything drastic or it might hurt everything you have now.

You know, marriage is a commitment, and if you didn't make him happy he wouldn't have married you.

You guys have been together for so long, of course the relationship will seem a little boring because the relationship isn't new.

I would never step aside to let my spouse be with anyone else.

Your talking about a spouse not a boyfriend. In marriages they go duel. In that's when cheating goes on. What makes you think it's not OK if you can't make someone happy it's OK for them to find someone else? How could they not cheat if he out there trying to seek happiness. That's not going to happen without cheating. Please if and when you get married don't be so passive. A good marriage take two strong people not one. It's hard work. You must not think to good about yourself. Please don't go into a marriage with this kind of attitude. You will be married a lot of times. If your husband turns out to be a cheater or abusive that's a good reason to get out, not because "HE" unhappy. There's a hole lot of things that come with not being happy. In most of the time when the other person not happy it's not the other person the spouse that's not making them unhappy it's there own self. You would blame yourself for your husband not being happy one day? Because that's what your saying. That sounds crazy to me. Please rethink it out. You sound like a caring person but you got it wrong. Read ten stupid things women do to mess up their lives by Dr. Laura C. Schlessinger.

how could u just step aside and let someone else take your spouse? if they wanted to leave u for this other person who was going to be better to them, that means They have been already cheating on u. to feel this way u would be assuming u were the one at fault if the relationship was not working out. i would step aside but would be hurt, and feel betrayed. i would leave with my dignity, but i would let him know what i thought of him. if he is not happy the problem may well be with in him and not have anything to do with u.

I couldn't understand someone making my fiance happier then I do. I'm beautiful, charming, and I give him WHATEVER he wants, WHENEVER he wants, & HOWEVER he wants it. He is going to marry me because of this.
If you are having doubts...don't. He married you for a reason, Believe and have confidence in yourself and you will make him the happiest man ever.

To answer the ? correctly...yeah I would step aside. I couldn't stand the thought of someone else making him happier than I.

I would only step aside if my spouse didn't want me. If he did want me and I thought someone else could make him happier, I would remind myself that he chose ME and I would do my best to make him as happy as I could, because that's what love does. Love doesn't think for the other person and assume that they would want someone else instead. Love allows the spouse to think for themself and to make their own decisions. If the spouse made that decision and chose someone else, then yes, I would step aside because I could never be happy myself being married to someone who wasn't happy being married to me.

The last three years that my husband was alive, I basicly did step aside although we stayed together. He had an affair that I learned of and because he had cancer I never said anything about it. I know she made him happy when they were together and I didn't want to destroy that happiness for a dying man.
