Well for a start there's Yahoo Kids! (used to be called Yahooligans... which was always a little bit tasteless!):
http://kids.yahoo.com/
they have kids games, movies and more.
another great one is done by the BBC in England, and you can find it here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/
it's fun and very education based. they also have a children's learning center, which has some great stuff:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/learning/subjects/childrens_learning.shtml
another super fun place is done by the Disney Channel... some cool games here:
http://tv.disney.go.com/disneychannel/games/index.html
don't forget the Knowlegde Bears at:
http://www.kbears.com/
which has some great educational items, and so does NASA's page for kids:
http://www.nasa.gov/audience/forkids/home/index.html
and you can find a whole bunch of links at http://www.kidsites.com
they actually test all the sites out for you, and have them categorized.
Hope this helps!

Webkinz is an awesome website. You just purchase a cute stuffed animal of your choice and enter the code in on their site and you can play tons of games. It's a virtual pet site so you take care of your pet by playing with it, feeding it, dressing it, etc. And there's no need to worry about your kids chatting with the wrong people because the chat is all preset sayings. It's a lot of fun. Good luck!

Try this site
stumbleupon.com
It's a toolbar you download onto your computer, you then fill out a profile of your interests like fashion, romance, games, sports, music, movies, philosophy, computers, cooking, history, travel, etc on your homepage. When you click the "Stumble" button on the tool bar it takes you to random websites on the Internet that fits your profile.
it's incredibly addictive
