You can get the mother Dr Spocks parenting book. I always referred to it from infancy to many years later. Very informative book. I had gotton it for my baby shower & it was one of the most valuable gifts I got.
If you want to get something for the baby you can get a musical merry-go-round that plays really nice baby song as it goes around. They also have with teddy bears, different animals etc with music too. Some are on a see-saw going up & down as music plays etc...They are very nice gifts.

Well, I can tell you that the best baby gift I got from my shower was a Target Gift card for $150.00 (from a group). My husband and I used it for things like diapers, and the small needed items after the baby is born. It came in very handy.
If a gift card isn't exactly what you want to do, then I would go and create a basket. Put in there a package of diapers, a sleeper, washcloth and towel, a couple of small toys, some of the samples of shampoo, lotion, powder and the like, and maybe place all of it into a baby bath tub. Something like this, or creating something else is very original, you can keep it very ambiguous when it comes to the sex of the baby, and you can get the things that a mom and dad need with a new baby that others may not think of. Have fun with this, and you can get rather creative. And it can be of any cost, depending upon how much money you have.
Good luck!!

Okay, well on Oprah a couple of months ago was a women who has discovered a "baby language" so to say. At first I thought it sounded kooky, but when I was given her DVD and watched it, lets just say it was a life saver. I have four month old twins and at the time they were much younger, and it was like a miracle. And it is so simple, there are only about 5 key sounds you have to listen for and remember, so from experience, I would have to say that this will be the absolute best gift you could give her. It takes the guess work out of decoding what the baby needs or wants.

My favorite thing was this little sling type chair that was just a few inches off the floor. It was small so didn't take up a lot of room in our small apartment. I could put my baby in that and set her on the bathroom floor just inside the door when I needed to take a shower, or by the kitchen counter when I was cooking something. She could see and hear me, and I could keep an eye on her. Some of them are basic, and some play music and bounce the baby gently.

A little bite of everything is great. Nursing pads, diaper cream, diapers, wash clothes (not the little ones from Toys r us, they are so tiny and when out of the wash they roll up a little), onsies, sleepers, vaseline, wipes, baby mittens, baby shampoo/lotion. Put it in a basket, add some juice or fruits or bottles of water. When I was pregnant I got a very generous care basket and it was really great.

how about finding out what she's stressing about (come on every pregnancy every mom gets stressed about getting a certain item rather it be clothes, a crib, to a stroller or a car seat) my last day of work my COMPANY gave me a baby car seat and my trainer gave me a jogging stroller. But gift certificates are good, and lots of clothes size 3 months and up!

Go with easy stuff.... stuff that she'll need.
- bath supplies (baby shampoo, body wash, etc... Gerber makes some)
- receiving blankets
- a baby blanket
- mobile for over the crib
- piggy bank with some money in it
- white/yellow (good for either sex) little outfits (the little snap/diaper type outfits...forget what they're called)
Hope these helped

Get her as many diapers as you can in different sizes, and a gift certificate to a day spa.
These are two things that she is going to need!
