My glasses have scratches in them caused by the dishwasher. They don't come out, and look awful. Don't the big detergent companies know this happens? And is there any way to prevent it? I use a rinse agent but it doesn't help.

It may not be the detergent causing the scratches.
Your dishwasher may need a good flushing out. I have to do that to my dishwasher from time to time.

What can also happen is a cup or glass could have been broken in your dishwasher and the tiny pieces of glass is hiding under the filter where you can't see it and needs to be removed.

Most dishwasher detergent is an abrasive. That's how they clean, since there is no physical contact or scrubbing of the dishes. That's why glasses get a little foggy when they're old.
Try running a cycle with no dishwasher soap, with a new unscratched glass and see if they are still scratched. If so, then like the answer above, there's broken glass or something else loose splashing around with the water.

New dishwashers are designed to clean dishes with food on them. I bet you pre-wash, or rinse your dishes. The recommended amount of detergent is based on a generic, not pre-rinsed, amount of "dirt" on the dishes. The simple solution is to either stop pre-rinsing your dishes or use less soap. They say to scrape, not rinse, if that helps. The scratched dishes, I'm afraid, are, well scratched... Hope this helps.
