How about the thousand islands? (Alexandria Bay NY) .....Niagara Falls would be good too (I used to have family up near there and did the 8-9 hour drive from southern Jersey all the time) Though I have not been to Virginia, I hear it is beautiful.....Or, maybe the lakes regions in Maine? That is top of my list. (you could rent a lake house and watch the moose and all that fall stuff)

Go North!! While your 2 yr old might not appreciate the foliage, there are all sorts of little country stops to make where there are kid activities. Hicks Orchard outside Lake George, NY and The Apple Barn in southeastern VT are a few.

I don't know how far you want to go, but North Carolina is beautiful in the fall -especially the Blue Ridge mountain region. I went to school in Boone and there is great hiking, canoeing, sightseeing, etc, plus kid-friendly stuff like Tweetsie Railroad and gem mining....stay in Boone, Blowing Rock, or Banner Elk. It's wonderful.
