I currently have a 29 gallon tank. I have 2 black moors and 2 gold fish fantails, 1 plecto (bristle nose), and 1 chinese algae eater. I have had the 4 goldfish for about 3yrs and did upgrade from a 10 gal to a 29 gal because they did get huge. My Plecto is not really big too although he usually just hides out. should I upgrade to a 55 gallon now???

As far as the healthyness of the fish, I think they are pretty healthy and I take care of them very well. They were very tiny when i got them and now they are huge 3yrs later. I am just concerned that the goldfish don't have enough room to really swim anymore.

A 55 gallon would be a great size for those fish. Don't succumb to the temptation to add more once you get it though or you'll end up having to upgrade yet again down the road!

Keep an eye on the algae eater. CAEs are known to get aggressive as they get bigger and they start feeding on the slime coating on large, slow-swimming fish's scales, which puts your goldfish at risk.

Also, don't bother to put live plants in there with the goldfish. They'll consider it a salad bar and destroy everything in no time flat!

Good luck!

You should absolutely upgrade, your tank is too small. You also have a bad combination of fish--your pleco and chinese algae eater are tropical, and your goldfish are coldwater. Even if they have survived this long and seem "fine," inevitably some of your fish are not thriving because they are not being kept at the proper temperature.

The other problem is that your CAE will eventually become aggressive, stop eating algae, and start sucking on your goldfish and eating their slime coat. This will eventually kill your goldfish.

My advice is to get a 55 (or better yet, a 75) to keep your 4 goldfish in. Then you can turn your 29 into a tropical tank and keep your bristlenose pleco in there, along with some community fish like tetras, rasboras, etc. (he won't get more than 6 inches, common plecos are the ones that get huge). I would rehome the chinese algae eater.

It would be a good idea with that many fish. Size of the fish is not the only reason for upgrading, goldfish produce a LOT of waste and having a bigger tank with a bigger filter will help you not have to clean the tank out quite as often. If you want more information on freshwater fish, I found this book VERY helpful when I started my tank: A-Z of Tropical Fish by Burgess, Bailey and Exell.

the extra water the fish has, the cleanser the water would be (regularly) and the extra healthy the fish would be. the first rule on goldfish for healthful stocking situations is 5 gallons of water according to inch of fish. presently a commet of a million.5 inches is nice in a 10 gallon tank yet while it reaches 2.a million inches it needs larger, yet all this relies upon on your clear out, feeding and a mix of alternative factors.

well i would because with that many fish i would give the fish a little more space to swim just dont get a big big tank or they will have to much room and then you can not see them but i would
get a bigger one if i was you.

A larger aquarium is almost always a good idea. In this case I think you will find that your goldfish may grow even faster. Definitely move up.Maybe try some tough plants. Have fun with your tanks.------PeeTee
