It's a quote from Holden about becoming sentimental, I believe.
He's become a little more open about things in his life and he's recounted his story, and he's feeling rather nostalgic, if I remember correctly.

Since Holden was telling someone about his life and the people in it, he was forced to think about all the people in his life. Thinking about them made him nostalgic; he was able to realize how much he missed them, especially his sister. So maybe he was thinking that if he just didn't talk to anyone about anything, then he wouldn't think about his life.
