The Americans admired the pan-Slavic colors (red, white, and blue) that are on the Russian Federation's flag so much that they decided to use the same colors.
And don't say that the Russian Federation's flag design came about only recently; it did, but Peter the Great established the colors as part of a Russian maritime flag, and that was a very long time ago.

The colors in the flag have no meaning at first, see the link below.
The seal colors had these meanings:
White: Signifies purity and innocence
Red: Signifies valor and bravery
Blue: Signifies Vigilance, perseverance, and justice

You've probably heard about meanings attached to the different colors, but our first flags were pretty much just altered versions of the British flag, which was red, white, and blue.

Because they mean something. White is for innocence and purity, red is for hardiness and valor, and blue is for vigilence, preserverence, and justice.
