Franklin Roosevelt may have instilled hope in Americans but his programs did little to relieve the depression that gripped the nation (and the world, it was a worldwide depression). All statistics will show that to be fact as any historian knows.

The production that was necessary to supply war materials for the Allied nations was what was necessary to put the American economy back in full swing. Stock prices however did not regain the value that had prior to 1929 until 1954.

Therefore, the Great Depression was said to have lasted about 12 years, 1929-1941.

Also, it is not true that people kept money out of banks during FDR's administration. He instilled confidence in banks again with his "bank holiday."

And duiring the war it was most difficult for Americans to spend money. You couldn't buy a car or appliances. Those factories were producing war supplies. Food, gasoline, rubber, silk, etc. were rationed. People still did without many goods but they were used to hard times having gone through the depression. Hoover had done many of the same things that Roosevelt did - He just wasn't as good at promoting his plans and he made mistakes. See Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New deal by Leuchtenburg.

Roosevelt's new ideas, and hiring the best and the brightest gave people hope, but the real force getting the country out of the Depression was World War 2.
The other huge boost came just after the war, when people finally had the time, and the consumer goods to buy (which weren't available during the War) with the money they had earned in war work, as soldiers, or had invested in war bonds.
Another revolutionary idea was the "G.I. Bill" which provided a college education to veterans---this was a key investment in the future, and fueled a boom in education and changed the class system in the U.S. permanently.

they won ww2. After the war, they contributed to the rebuilding of Europe and Japan. In Japan, they got to actually guide the growth of the country making sure it benefitted the US too. Also, before the war, the UK was the world's biggest super power. After the war, only the US had a well developed economy that was not completely devastated, so they were able to grow rapidly without much competition.

Some of the government programs helped, but the main thing that pulled us all the way out of the depression was WW2. War is horrible, but is sure does help a national economy.

It so happens that in war, money gets circulated. The problem during the depression was that people hid their money under their mattresses, dressers, etc. and wouldn't "circulate" it (spend it or invest it) since they were afraid of losing it. When Roosevelt got us into World War II, it prompted the citizens to start spending money, taking us out of the Great Depression. However, when he first became president, he started us on the track out of depression. It succeeded not because of the brilliance or expected outcome, but because he was willing to try to get us out. Hoover, the president before, didn't try to get us out at all, so Roosevelt won by saying (paraphrasing), "I don't guarantee that I'll get us out of this, but I will try anything to get us out."

He also legalized alcohol again, so people spent money on booze. (Just kidding, he did legalize it again, but it didn't get us out).
