During 1800s, Anthropologists had a problem as to how
to classify human beings. One researcher proposed the
expression "intelligent animal". After advanced studies
on monkeys, it was dropped. Another researcher proposed
"tool using animal". After observing some animals
making wooden tools and sharpening them with knife like
stones, it was dropped. Another researcher proposed
"weapon using animal". A decade ago, a rare film was
shot in African forests. One short monkey was hit very
badly by a big monkey. The short monkey prepared a
wooden knife using stones and hid it on the top of a
tree. After some days, when the big monkey came to
attack the short monkey, it ran up to the tree for the
weapon it has hid and killed the big monkey. The one
thing that the anthropologists found with any group of
human beings, even if they did not have contacts with
the out side world for thousands of years, is
spirituality with some form of religion. So, man is a
"spiritual animal" if you want to call him that way.
The Upanishads say that "Manush" (human) was so named
because he has "Manas" a mind higher than that of the
animals which realises the divinity in creation. It was
present since the creation of human beings. Religion is
the characteristic feature of most of the human beings.
It is as eternal and and as unchanging as the Almighty.
Disbelief by a few will not affect it.
So, the one thing that defines human nature and
distinguishes him for the rest of nature is religion!

1)We all wish to be relieved of suffering, or put another way we all want happiness.
If you want something else, you still want happiness because by obtaining that thing or state, you become satisfied, i.e. happy, content.
2) You will only find true lasting happiness within yourself, because external phenomena are transient and imperfect (imperfect in the sense that they do not fit all your wants).
3) You are what you think. You mind full of thoughts is just like a kid's room filled wall-to-wall with posters. If you think a lot of bad stuff, then that is the environment in which future thought will be birthed, breeding perpetual "bad" thoughts. Likewise, if you think "good" thoughts honestly (intent matters!) you will have a better outlook on life and yourself.
Thats all I got for now, I need some more caffeine 8)

Cognitive Dissonance. If something you believe will happen and you have based a lot of stock in it, and have told other people that you know it will happen yet nothing happens or even come close to it, you make rationalizations as to why that thing didn't happen in order to live with it. A good example is Aesop's Fable about "Sour Grapes".

Even when we think we are being objective, we aren't. Our point of view has to always be subjective because that is the only way we can view the world - through our own experiences.

Greed, selfishness, hatred.
But there are also good things like compassion, love, relationships, and the universally accepted premise that flatulence is a source of amusement.
