They look for students that are not just smart, but well rounded. Volunteer for community service, participate in clubs, band, theater arts, sports, everything. And while doing all this, keep your GPA up.

Take the highest level of courses your school offers. That means taking an AP class instead of the regular one. If your school doesn't offer much, try taking classes at the local community college.
Get a great SAT/ACT score.
Talk to your teachers. Particularly the English ones because they usually write really well. Get to know them really well so you can get a letter of rec that is more than just a "Janie is a great kid" form type letter.
Finally, do special things outside of school. Joining a bunch of clubs or doing a bunch of volunteer work doesn't cut it. That's not special. You don't have to do sports if that's not your thing. If you do research, try and get it published or funded by some famous entity. If you join a service club, don't just be the president, organize something that has the city or state involved. If you do sports, just being on varsity isn't good. Winning a state championship or being nationally ranked is what you're going for.

FIRST U NEED 2 TAKE THE S.A.T.s, IF U DIDN'T TAKE IT. DID U CHECK OUT THE COLLEGE'S STATS? U NEED TO HAVE REALLY GOOD GRADES, PREFERABLY A B+ OR HIGHER TO GET INTO IVY LEAGUE COLLEGES. THE COLLEGES ALSO LOOK FOR EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SPORTS AND CLUBS. U SHOULD ALWAYS CHECK OUT THE COLLEGE'S WEBSITE FOR MORE INFO AND TALK TO UR GUIDANCE COUNSELOR OR COLLEGE ADVISOR. BE MINDFUL OF THE DUE DATES, THEY ARE CLOSER THAN U THINK! I THINK STANFORD WANTS STUDENTS WITH GRADES ABOVE 90, THINK U CAN HANDLE THAT?
