It started from an explorer who was sailing and realized that the farther away he got from a bouey in the ocean he realized that the water seemed to rise on the bouey the farther he got from it. Then he concluded that the world was round because he was going "under" the bouey. If the world was flat, he would have seen the whole bouey no matter how far he got away. Hope it helps.

Because the Norsemen and Columbus didn't fall off the edge. And it's not perfectly round, it's more egg-shaped than globular. Seafarers and people at high altitudes probably noticed a curvature of the far horizon.
