It does accentuate dexterity which is valued as a feminine trait. The word twirl itsself describes a circular/round motion which is associated with female form. So while you can twirl as a guy, you will be associating yourself femininely.
You can find something similar but more masculine with some creativity... Like juggling? "Twirling" ... swords? Anything other than a baton. I just think of the glitter and streamers I had on my baton when I was 6.

My aunt is a baton instructor and takes on both girls and boys in her class. She has yet to have any boys interested in baton at the studio, but when we have children's functions at church the boys always seem to take to baton twirling more than the girls.

When I was in high school (many years ago) - the drum major of our band was a fabulous twirler - and it was a guy. He was very incredibly talented - and used to wow the crowds.
Granted - my Mom told me a few years ago that he is happily "lving with his partner" - but so what.
Trucks are not just for boys - dolls are not just for girls. And in my opinion - batons are for anybody who wants to twirl them!!!

Unless you are a Drum Major in a marching band and you own a mace, yes, it is for girls. But, if you're a Drum Major, then it's ok.
