I just got a diagnostic test on the check engine light in my car and got the mass air flow sensor code but the mechanic can't do it till next week. For the past few days, I've experienced loss of power in the engine with a bad pick up. Is it ok for me to drive around for a week or will that exacerbate the problem?

MAFS adjust how much fuel is injected, in this case it sound like your car is not getting enough fuel. most of the time cleaning the MAFS will fix the problem for a short peiord of time but you must be very cafeful when cleaning it. or just go to Napa and by a new one, they are really easy to change.

You don't say the model and year of your car that would help. most recent w/in last 5 years or so cars will "ignore" the bad MAF signal and switch to a preprogrammed "limp" mode which will operate the car with reduced performance - and if you don't push it too hard - or too long probably (?)won't hurt it? Plug and unplug the connectors to make sure it is not a bad connection. Make sure they are clean and dry.

The MAF sensor is the primary signal the computer uses to adjust the engine. Driving it will only gum it up, maybe cause damage, maybe not...I would say don't!

You can make it as long as the sensor works. When it completely fails you are stranded. I have gotten them to come back to life by cleaning them with brake parts cleaner (carb cleaner leaves a residue). Jut unscrew it and sprat it clean and let it dry.
