I don't remember the Harry Potter books saying anything specific about this, but I have a feeling that they were born around the same time. (They both have teenage kids)
If they did went to school together, what year was Malfoy in when James was in his first year??

Lucius Malfoy was remarked to be 41 years old in the 5th book. He would be about 42 in HBP. So in Deathly Hallows he would be 43. James and Lily had Harry when they were 22 (JK said). 22+16=38. 38+1=39. They did go to school together, but Lucius was a few years older.

Lucius Malfoy was born in 1954 and educated at Hogwarts where he possibly might have met Narcissa.
James Potter was born in 1958 and was educated in Hogwarts.

As far as I know, there has been no specific reference to the two of them attending at the same time. But I do agree with you that it would seem likely that they would attend at the same times.
Try checking out JK Rowlings official site. I don't remember seeing anything about it, but you can send her an email asking. She has a lot of info on the site that she didn't include in the books (background on characters, storylines that were edited out, etc.)

yeah, they did i remember in one of the books i think it was the chamber of secrets, they compared the two and how they were similar to the rivalry of harry and draco.
and they also said how they both went to the school about 50 years ago...i dont exactly remember but im sure they did go to school together.

James and Lucious did go to school together..with Voldemort...then known as Tom Riddle....
