Automatic transmission fluid is formulated to work with clutches. Motor oil is formulated to withstand the extremely high temperatures in a combustion chamber and prevent itself from becoming acidic and eroding critical bearing surfaces in engine parts. If you added very little ATF to your engine, you might be lucky enough to have avoided any significant damage. If you have more than a quart of ATF in your engine, there might be significant damage to the engine if you have run it for an extended time period. If you changed your engine oil with ATF, and never started the car (or cranked it over for a VERY SHORT TIME), just flush it out with cheap engine oil; about 2 or 3 oil changes worth of oil. After the last oil change, drive around town for about 10 min. and change the oil again. Finally, after driving about 25 miles, I would change the oil one last time. Change the filter before and after the first set of oil changes, then after the 10 min. drive, then after the 25 mile drive.

lol. why? Did you completely fill it up with atf or did you top it off? If you just topped it off then you can drain it and refill with oil. If you completely filled it then I would drain it, flush it and refill.

It won't help it, as it is thinner and may not lubricate well.

Drain it all out, and put new oil and filter on it.
