Cowgirl is right. A free horse usually means its got problems. An experienced rider and trainer can deal with this but kids can't usually. But you can try to look on these sites. Just go to advanced search, put in mare and make sure the price range is on like 0 to maybe 500. I know you want a free horse but a lot of times a horse this cheap will have an owner willing to give away to the right home.

I also wouldn't put to much of your choice into a certain color. You might pass up a good horse because its a chestnut instead of a paint.

these are my favorite sites for looking for horses.

good luck!

Most free horses are free because they have something physically wrong with them that makes them unrideable.

If you want these free mares to ride or breed, you're SOL.

But petfinder.com has lots of free "companion" horses.

If you're willing to train a horse that has never had a saddle on it in it's life, there's lots of rescues that offer them for under $300.

If you're REALLY brave and experienced and have a 5' or taller fence you could get mustangs of various colors from the Pryor Mountain Horse Herd Adoption program in Montana for dirt cheap. There's a holding area near the Idaho/Wyoming border, so that's about 1.5 to 2 hour drive for you (I live 2 hours away from Idaho Falls) I got my black mare for $150.

Everyone so far is right, a free horse is a problem horse in most cases. Also, if you can't afford to initially buy a horse, how can you keep it? Buying a horse, even for a couple thousand dollars, is the cheapest part.

Try calling the horse rescues. Ask them if they have any of the breeds you are looking for. I'm sure they will be delighted to help.
