Okay, maybe I was a tad melodramatic, but only to relay how truly unpleasant a task this is for me. A real idiosyncracy. My commode is clogged. I have one of those plungers with the rim tucked up inside, to form an opening around the inside of the plunger where things can get stuck. Like a trap. I hate germs, don't want to plunge because I know that ick is going to get trapped inside the plunger, and I don't want to remove it from the commode for the dripping all over my bathroom. I might as well toss the plunger, but I can't keep replacing them. This may sound trite, but it's really a dilemma for me. Suggestions most welcome and appreciated!

Good suggestions, but what do I do about the stuff caught inside the rim of the plunger? Yucky toilet paper and nasty commode water? Ewwwwwwwwww!

Eurydice has it so far, but I still have the stuff up inside the plunger. Darn!

Hi, I used to buy the type of plunger you are describing, but I no longer do so because I have found one that is better. I have included a link to the plunger that I have found, does the best job with none of the issues you describe. The second link is a customer review of this product.

This plunger is designed so nothing gets stuck or trapped inside the unit. The best way to clean and maintain your new plunger is to fill your newly unclogged toilet bowl with a little bleach, or other disinfecting type cleaner, swish the plunger around a little and let it soak for a few minutes. Rinse your plunger off by flushing the toilet and return it to the canister, allowing it to dry in the built in drip tray.

You could always leave it on the rim of the toilet, then lower the lid down against it once the plunging is done and you need to flush. (That will keep the plunger dripping into the toilet, instead of onto your floor.) After the toilet fills with clean water, put the plunger in and swish it around to clean it off.

If you want to clean it further, you could keep a bucket for nasty jobs and fill it with cleaner, then soak the plunger in there for a bit and rinse it.

There are also plungers that come with holders that automatically close like a clamshell around them. It's neater and keeps the plunger off of the floor. We have one like that. I believe we bought it at Target.

I can understand your frustration; I have a friend that has OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and this kind of thing freaks her out in a huge way too. My plunger is the same way as yours and I know it can be a little gross. Once I plunge, I always have the bathtub turned on with really hot water and I run the water into the plunger to get anything out that's in there. Normally there's nothing in there anyway.. Either way it's gross, but it's best to get it all out before you sit it back down on your floor...

Good luck! :)

Yup, sounds gross to me. Use the plunger, but keep a cleaning and/or disinfectant spray handy. After you have unclogged your toilet, while holding your plunger over the toilet, spray it with the cleaner, and run it through the water as you flush the toilet. Repeat as necessary.

In the country most people do not put tissue down their toilets, they place it in a trash can beside the toilet. This really reduces clogs. If you line the can with a bag and use one of those cans with a flip top lid it can keep your bathroom cleaner.

then what I would suggest is to wash your plunger after use, and then spray with bleach. preferably spray with Lysol for disinfecting purposes
