Stay at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel on Kingshyway Avenue. I has a million dollar view of Forest Park and the Central West End, an area of multimillion dollar turn of the century homes (I used to own one of them). Here is their website: http://www.chaseparkplaza.com/
Visit the St. Louis Zoo, its one of the finest in the world, and walk over to the Art Museum. Its small but its modest collection is first rate.
For Lunch, head out to Blueberry Hill in "The Loop", the section of Delmar Blvd that is in the close in suburb of University City. While you're there, check out the St. Louis "Walk of Fame" which was begun by Joe Edawrds, owner of Blueberry Hill.
In the afternoon, walk around the Central West End. Although many of the streets are private its not likely that anyone will object to your strolling along them. If you walk along Westminister you'll be able to see the apartment building that Tennesse Williams lived in and wrote about in "The Glass Menagerie." The houses here were all built at the time of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
You might also want to check out the Scot Joplin House at 2658A Delmar. (Exercise some caution tho because the neighborhood is a bit dicey).
Laclede's Landing downtown is the oldest area of St. Louis. its been converted to an area of bars and shops. Worth a bit of walk about. The Riverfront and the Arch are, of course, the classic tourist sights in St. Louis. The Old Courthouse where the Dred Scot decision was handed down and the Old Cathedral are also worth looking at.
The New Cathedral, a few blocks to the east of the Chase Hotel, is a Neo-Byzantine wonder which you might be interested in.
For dinner I suggest someplace in the area known as "The Hill." This is the Italian neighborhood of St. Louis and its filled with excellant italian restaruansts and grocery stores.
Alternatively, if you're staying at the Chase, head downstairs to the Tenderloin Room, a classic, elegant steakhouse. Thurs-Saturday, Barbara Gabrielli plays at the piano bar there.

If you are doing the Route 66 thing (I did the same trip took a month to do it best trip yet!) You need to see the Route 66 sites. Ted Drews a must for Frozen Custard. Been on Route 66 for YEARS! The Courtsey Diner (Hampton Ave just down from Ted's). Go to the Chain of rocks bridge, they have some interesting things on it about 66. Also get out of the city and stop by Route 66 State Park. If you are coming through IL be sure to stop in Hamel IL at Scotty's best Horseshoe on Route 66! Cheap drinks too!

Usually when my family and I go, we like to check out the science center or the zoo. The arch is nice also.
As far as sports, we usually go to Blues and Cardinals games (if we can get tickets). The hockey season is from October to April and the baseball season is April to October (kind of nice how it works out). Rams games are good, but apparently pretty expensive. Blues games are good. They're also lowering prices. I believe on Tuesday nights for the rest of this year (only like 7 games left) all kids get in free and if they're wearing a Blue Note they get a free Big Mac and Soda. They also have student nights. Certain promotions allow you to get a $7 ticket. Cardinals games are great, but I would advise ordering the tickets ahead of time. As with any sporting event, food is outrageously expensive. The Blue Note store inside Scottrade has some Blues gear for decent prices, though.
As far as restaurants, there are some good ones in the area. I like Imos pretty well, but it's more of a takeout pizza place. I don't live in St. Louis, so most restaurants I haven't been to.
Of course you have the usually attractions: the arch, the Science Center, Forest Park, Scottrade (Blues), Edward Jones Dome (Rams), Busch (Cardinals), the Brewery (Budweiser), Union Station. There are a lot of things to do in St. Louis, so have fun.
I've never had any problems as far as crime in St. Louis, but I would still be careful about certain areas of town after dark.

good hotels...depends on your price range.
high end, go for the Chase Park Plaze near the central west end or Omni in the downtown area, or the Renassiance. Stay away from the hourly ones on the eastside hahaa. Most of the hotels are moderate though around here.
Food wise....grab a pizza at Black Thron Pub or Lemons ...best pizza in the city :)
for music...well that depends on what ya like. You can look online at http://www.rftstl.com/ to see what kinda bars have what kinda music goin on the day you come into town.

Theres a pizza place somewhere in St Louis that I keep meaning to go to that has been featured on the Travel Channel because they make the largest Pizza in the U.S. - (I think - I'd have to check on that)
Then theres also Union Station which is pretty much just shopping.

I personally hate st. Louis and yet I live here. Anyway the only thing I can think of is the zoo. Our zoo is one of the best in the world. There is also the arch. It has a nice museum and you can ride to the top and see the disgusting downtown line.
Eat at white castle. Those are a mo thing. They could make you sick though.
Stay in the most expensive hotel you can afford or you risk being robbed or having semen in your sheets or the ever classic peeping tom.
St. Louis sucks. Why would you want to come here in the first place.

Stay in Union Station. From there you can easliy drive to other parts of town or as one would say for adventure you could take metrolink. The Arch is interesting to go up in.
