there's no real way to narrow the gap, we need to keep things from getting worse. i think things are going okay. much better than a caste system don't you think? :) with the right amount of education and/or effort, you can actually move up in classes, which is a plus. but yeah there will always be the poor. and there will always be the rich. the real problem is trying to keep middle class from slipping into lower class. the middle class only make what about 120,000 a year between two people? or less? which is okay until you start having kids. house payments, taxes all that is a real burden. i think there should be more tax breaks for families where the mother works and where there are kids. lottery funded scholarships for poor students to pay for college is a good idea too. we have one now in our state, but it's for everyone who makes a certain GPA, and alot of the welthier kids get it, which is a waste, because they can afford it without outside help, so they get lazy in college and don' t try... and are wasting a seat where a poor but very motivated person could get a degree and make a better life for themselves. there should definately be measures to keep the poor from getting poorer, but i don't think there is a way to bring them even to middle class standards without hard work on thier own. and like another poster said, you can't take money away from a chairman that makes 256,000 a year. it's thier money and they earned it and they can spend it however they want. they shouldn't get paid less or have a penalty just beacuse they are doing a good job. how about an estate tax to tax inheritances before they are given to the benificiary? i mean i think if you're lucky enough to have a billionare uncle, that you should be able to be a millionare without having to work a day but come on.. they should tax it at double or triple the rate of a lottery winner and put the money to scholarships or charity or something..

There's so many people on here who would have you believe that there's no middle ground between free capitalism and an increasing gap between the rich and poor, and total communism. I would invite you all to turn your attention towards Western Europe, where people make a decent learning, have access to free higher education, have all necessary benefits, and have been enjoying a much higher standard of living for decades. Clearly, holding corporations to a higher standard, and putting a little money into necessary social programs isn't going to cause the entire country to collapse into anarchy, as the cons would have us believe. And by the way, most of the wealth in this country is inherited. So quite defending the rich for all the money they've "worked so hard" to "earn."

In a capitalist society such as America, you can't close the gaps between the rich and the poor. Not without heavy taxes (as another answer, "stealing from the rich and giving to the poor" so aptly, yet cheesily, illustrates), at least.
What you're looking for is COMMUNISM, which doesn't work out so well. Only there are the poor gauranteed a place alongside the rich.

I would first alter the tax codes, because in order to get deductions you basically need to make money and it seems to me that the rich are able to spend money like drunken sailors on cars, boats, and so on when there are people out there who can't even afford food for their families. I would make more tax breaks for the poor, increase taxes on the rich, and create more educational opportunities for the poor to improve their standard of living by going to school.

take out all the illegals and cut welfare. the jobs that illegals were doing will be given to those people. That way there is less poverty. However unless you are in a communist society there is always a gap that gets bigger as companies become more prominent

No way to do it without taking from the rich what they've earned, and that's not right, either. It's not for anyone to decide that someone can't be allowed to make as much as they want. Otherwise, there would be no incentive to better yourself. Money is a virtual concept now. Just because I make a million dollars doesn't mean that that's one million fewer dollars that you can make.

It cannot without a serious redistribution of wealth. We could institute government programs, but there will always be a lower class. The problem is that it is unAmerican to redistribute wealth without people earning their way.
If the question is really how can the lower classes improve themselves, then the answer is through changing their culture so that education is a priority instead of something to be ignored. But there will always be poor people.
