they usually last 3 years but only really valid in the county which did the check.

A CRB check doesn't have an expiry date.
But when you start a new job your new employer will ask for a new CRB check to be done as from the date of your old CRB check to the date of your new CRB check there is a gap where no checks have been made on you.
So your new CRB check could have a different result to your old CRB for e.g if you got fined for drink driving.
Its only worth applying for CRB's if the employer needs one when he/she gives you the job.

If you had your check with a previous employer and have moved jobs in the meantime, then the Criminal Recordds Bureau no longer facilitates portability of the check and advises potential employers that they can accept an old CRB check but AT THEIR OWN RISK
Your best bet is to check the CRB website http://www.crb.gov.uk and call them on 0870 90 90 811 (Their General Enquiries line)

A CRB check lasts for three years and costs 42 pounds. However, I believe that if you leave your place of work and start somewhere else where you need a check, you'll have to apply for another as they don't transfer.

You cant blag your way out of it, the checks they do are too comprehensive and even if you give some form of false information this will mean the check will bring up nothing at all, the business will smell a rat and you will not be employed. What is the job you are going to do if it is FSA regulated then they just need to prove you are not bankrupt. If you are dealing with customers in their homes then it totally depends on what you criminal record is, is it spent, how long ago was it. Be completely upfront with the employer, tell them everything(they will find out anyway) and take you chances. if it is a no... go for a job in a different environment until your finances are in better shape.

Even the government, who imposed this requirement, will not give a satisfactory answer to this question. I was given some piffle about the check reflecting a particular 'window of time'. It's pure Kafka.
Anyway, I've been using the same one for 4 years, and nobody has blinked an eye. Any reputable employer will pay for you to have a new one if they want that.

It can depend. Some jobs require you to get one every year. I started my nurse training last year...I needed an enhanced check before I started my course!! I know when people went for promotion at my workplace (hospital) they were offered the post pending a CRB check.
