On June 22, 1941 the Nazis launched Operation Barbarossa -- the invasion of Russia.

That morning some three million German soldiers, 3,500 tanks and nearly 3,000 planes of the Luftwaffe (the Nazi air force) decimated Russian positions along the border between the two countries; taking the Russians by complete surprise and over-running almost every frontline unit they had.

Yet Hitler's attack -- and the dictator had been involved in the planning of this invasion on almost every level -- got off five weeks later than planned. A critical delay that would come back to haunt the Germans by December of 1941.

The first months of the invasion saw one victory after another for the Germans. The Russians retreated into the heart of their country -- carrying out a "scorched earth" policy as they went; in essence, leaving nothing of use for the Germans as they fell back towards Moscow.

By December the Germans had driven to with in 15 miles of the Kremlin itself. Winter had arrived though and the blizzards, brutal cold and weather crippled supply lines of the Germans all began to take its toll on the troops.

The Battle of Moscow would be the high water mark for Hitler. Fresh Russian troops had a arrived and fiercely defended the city, finally driving the Germans out of the outlaying areas of Moscow by Spring.

Hitler would never again repeat the early success of Barbarossa on the Eastern Front.

Of the two I would have to say that it was the former Soviet Union as Stalin only used Hitler to keep him from invading the Soviets borders. But Hitler tried to invade Russia the the Russian people held their own
Hey dances the Soviet Union had that name after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 where the Royal family was killed

That would be Russia. They were allies until Hitler invaded.

That was Russia; the "Soviet Union" didn't exist until after WWII was over.
