Its WAY easier than some would have you believe.
Cotton shrinks, so cold.
Some synthetics shrink, so cold.
Darks and bright colors, cold.
light colors, warm or cold.
whites, warm or hot.
Don't mix, unless you're a guy... I've never noticed a difference.
Supposedly, the bright and dark colors will run into the light colors. I've never noticed that.
If things are stained and dirty, go warm instead of cold. You can add some ammonia for smell and stains, or bleach, but NOT BOTH!!! Use a lot less of these than you think. like 1/4 cup per load. Use a stain remover, but then not bleach or ammonia. You don't want any interactions. Test colorfastness first. Colors fade less in colder water, but get less clean. Use your judgment. That's it.
Simple, right?
LOL!
Good luck, friend.
