Poland, which was independant at the time. The country was never part of the Soviet Union. After World War II it was forced to join the Warsaw Pact by the Soviet Union. Germany had previously invaded Czechoslovakia, but because the UK was ill-prepared for war, this fact was virtually ignored. Chamberlain, then PM, returned from talks with Hitler in Munich, waving his, now, infamous piece of paper and declared 'peace in our time'.
The UK declared war on Germany after the invasion of Poland.
The Soviet Union was one of the allied countries, and suffered more deaths, both civilian and military, than the other allied countries. A fact which is often forgotten.
Before the outbreak of war, parts of China (Manchuria) were invaded by the Japanese. So, whilst not being entirely for us (the Allies), it was certainly not against us, that is, it was not a member of the Axis powers (the baddies)

Yeah,
It's Poland Dude!
Germany's invasion of Poland broke the peace with France and England and their treaty with Poland bound both countries to come to the aid of the Poles. France fell in three weeks and the British were lucky to save their army from the beaches of Dunkirk. So began the greatest war in the history of the world. you would think that you might want or need to know this stuff.

it is neither. WW2 is sometimes attributed to Hiltler invading Poland (not the Soviet Union) but it is far more complex than that. The power struggle was going on long before then and you could even say that WW2 started at the Treaty of Versailles at the end of WW1.
To be honest you could write a whole series of books about it (and people have)

WWII began with Germanys invasion of POLAND!!! they never invaded china nor was china involved in WWII, and Russia started WWII on the same side as Nazi Germany! Russia did switch sides, but at the start it was on Germany's side.
The invasion of Poland was a last straw for Britian and France, after Germany's taking back of the Rhineland, the invasion of Austria and the taking of the sudetenland (former czeckoslovakia).Poland was the last of the 'Arian' lands left for Hitler to 'unite under one rule'. he was a little obsesed with a creation of one country for all German peoples. when Hitler took the sudetenland, Britiain and France were firm that this would be the last land he would take. so when he took Poland they decided to kick butt!!

NEITHER of those two, my friend! Great Britain declared war, on Germany, at 11 o'clock, in the morning, - according to a RADIO BROADCAST, from that DAY, on SUNDAY, 03 SEPTEMBER, 1939, - TWO DAYS after German troops invaded their geographical neighbour, -POLAND!
