B cells undergo the primary immune response and start to proliferate and differrentiate in response to being presented a particular antigen. Some become memory B cells, others become Antibody-producing plasma cells. Initially, IgM antibody is produced, then later, a specific Ig isotype is produced. The secondary immune response takes place on subsequent presentation of the same antigen. This is much quicker and a more powerful response. Some antigens are T cell dependent (they need to be presented by a T-cell) and some are independent. Many cytokines and interleukins are used to communicate among the different types of immune cells in the production of antibodies.
