If they just handed the North of Ireland, back to Ireland where it belongs, it would stop all the fighting.
But the Irish will probably have to kill all the brits in the north before that happens and win back the north like they won back the rest of Ireland
What do u think?

Nice to see the government getting the blame for a historical act. History books are freely available in any library, read one from any side of the Ireland debate and you'll see who is to blame for the divides in Ireland.
I do think, however, that nowadays, it's the people living in these areas that are stopping progress from happening as they want to remain tied to a country which took over the land they currently live in (and I don't just mean Ireland, look at Gibraltar).
Ireland was a country in its' own right until we Brits decided that England, Wales and Scotland (another land stolen), were not large enough to cope with our land demands.

All I know is that for thirty years I have listened to the news and the problems are never going to stop the catholics in NI and the Proddies have not moved an inch its all talk and hot air just listen to Sinn Fien or Paisleys mob never will they answer a question all of them looking out to put one over on the other, most people I know in Eire don't even think NI is part of Ireland and most Brits don't want the place. it will just drag on and on as there is to much money being made out of the troubles for the nutters in the north to want to stop.

Let me EDUCATE people who don't know the basics (e.g. Americans).
Southern Ireland (Eire) and Northern Ireland are very different places - the south is mainly Catholic; and the north has a slight majority of "Scottish" Protestants, who started moving there 400 years ago.
The situation is NOT one of Eire "fighting" the UK for Northern Ireland. Eire considers the north an embarrassment and tends to avoid it. A slight majority of people in the North favour remaining part of the UK, and the rest either want to be an INDEPENDENT entity - independent of Eire and the UK - or part of Eire.

Although I'm Canadian and proud to be a subject of the British Commonwealth/Empire, I will always maintain the world would have been better off under Soviet rule. Canada, Britain, Europe, America, etc., could have all been Soviet Republics. No matter what the nay-sayers will spout, Communism was truly a great system that was never really given a chance.

During the second world war, Churchill offered Northern Ireland back to Ireland if they sided with the UK in the war, rather than stay nuetral.(Churchill wanted them to be able to hand over German U-Boat crews to us)
The offer was turned down, becouse if Northern Ireland become part of Ireland, the percentage of protestants in the voting poulation would become to high, and the chances of them having Catholic leaders would lessen.

You've just explained why we are there in the first place.
Civil war.
Dont get me wrong, I'd love to stop seeing British soldiers killed on the streets of Northern Ireland too, but while peolpe still want us there, then I'm afraid there will be no change.
Tolerance needs to be installed in the young, only then will this be resolved

The fighting has already stopped.
Well where I live in Ireland nothing is happening. I have a sister in Belfast and 1 in Derry and there is nothing ever going on there.
No one cares wether there is a united Ireland or not as long as there is peace.

suppose you got a united irland.what then, sooner or later you are going to realise that ireland isent even yours, is it not true that ireland is going to be a state in the united states of europe, and all your laws will come from the alien place called brussels.
your not fighting for a united irish nation in its own right, your fighting for a united state under foreign occupation by the e.u.
you have all been fooled, the same as the english, and the welsh and the scotts. you shall not leave for your children a free land for their inherritance, you shall leave them a foreign occopied state. you have been defeated, but not by britain by europe,And they did it without firing a shot, it was done by money, comfort and convienience.so stop pretending.

I always found it interesting that, in my travels, most Britons wish that the six counties of N.I. were given to Ireland. However, most Irish in the Republic of Ireland don't really seem to care one way or the other. As usual, it's the radical idiots on both sides who ruin things for the masses.

Not to be ofensive, but the UK has a far superior military (AND is a nuclear state). I dont see N.Ireland slipping away from the UK's grasp, a territorial capture of a few hundered sq km is one thing, total invasion just wouldnt happen.
