I have a lot of material to cover and I am trying to figure out the best approach.

Assuming you have a text book, probably the best thing to do is look for questions or problems to solve in your book. Usually at the end of each chapter, textbooks have "review questions" or something like that.

Answer those questions in writing. Writing the answers helps to nail it in your brain. Do it once "open book" style, reading the answers and methods from the book. Then answer the questions again without looking at the book, but if necessary, maybe referring to the answers you got before.

Turn off the tv, rewrite your notes as large as you can on a huge piece of paper and then write them a small as you can on a tiny piece of paper.

Same as any exam.. Read your books and research on the internet. There is no magic pill.
