You might actually want to read it because it tells about all the characters and the differences between the Greasers and the Socs. But I'll give you a short summary anyway.
As Ponyboy walks home from the movies, a couple of Socs follow him and beat him up. His brothers, Darry & Sodapop(Curtis) and the Gang (Johnny Cade, Two-Bit Mathews, Dally Winston, and Steve Randal) chase them off and Pony describes each of them.(Like I said, you should probably read it..) How Two-Bit's a joker, Johnny's quiet, Soda's handsome, Darry's cold, Steve is Soda's best buddy, and How Dally is the "real" character of the gang, and that he has a long record at the police station and that he's a dangerous guy. By the end of the first chapter, Soda tells Ponyboy that Darry doesnt mean to be rough with him and he doesnt mean half the things he says and that Soda's going to marry Sandy (his girlfriend) after Ponyboy gets out of School.(Soda dropped out and works at a gas station.) And you find out that Ponyboy "never uses his head"
I hope that helps you out but I really suggest you read the book because its a GREAT book. And It has been for many, many years!!

The kid gets the book from the teacher.
The kid opens the book.
The kid reads a chapter of the book.
The kid realizes, "Hey, I actually did something today to make me a better student, a better learner, and a better person."
The kid stands up and goes for a walk.
The kid is a better person.
Read the book.

cmon man, read it its a good book, or at least rent the movie, lots of stars in it looking really young.
