As some of the answers say above, they can be dangerous if you are taking too many different types and not comparing the dosages in each tablet.

Eg. you might be taking a high dose Vitamin C tablet but also a multi-vitamin tablet which contains a high dose of Vitamin C as well. Too much Vitamin C is no good for you.

absolutely. Too much of some vitamins can make u very ill. Multi-vitamins are pretty safe to take if you follow recommended doses, but unless your doctor has recommended you take a certain vitamin it is best not to take them. A lot of vitamins make little difference anyway especially if your body has enough of them, they may not be readily absorbed. On the other hand there are certain people (such as pregnant women) who can benifit significantly from taking such suplements as folic acid. Be sure to get a blood test done from your doctor. It is your best bet. Most food these days are packed with vitamins and nutrients...

Only if the company making the vitamins has put something dangerous in the product. Check the label before you but it. See if the ingredients come from natural sources. Synthetic vitamins are hard to digest and in some cases don't get absorbed.

I had just finished reading the article on BBC news. In a nut shell it depends on a number of factors and which vitamins you are a actually taking beta-carotene, Vitamins A, E, C etc. Ideally you should have a balanced diet.

But refer to the following link it might give you a clearer picture.

Not significantly. If you are taking more than the recommended dosage, or have other medical conditions that could be affected by taking vitamins such as A, beta carotene or E then you may increase your risk of death or illness.
This has come from Danish researchers … and is already being widely disputed.
If you’re worried talk to your doctor.

The latest research in America suggests that taking some vitamin suppliments can actually shorten a person's life. Of course, like all research, it is open to speculation, and may be disproved by other research. I guess the best advice is, for most people, if you have a good, balanced, healthy diet, you shouldn't need suppliments.

If they are water soluble (vitamin b, vitamin c) any excess that you take will be flushed out in the urine. Have you ever noticed how yellow your urine turns after taking a b-complex vitamin? The fat soluble vitamins can damage your liver (vitamin a, d, e, and k) if taken in excess. Here are a couple links with tons of information in them. The first is about water soluble vitamins, the second about fat soluble. Good luck!

Suggest you take a look at a copy of a book by Dr Strand, "What your doctor doesnt know about nutritional medicine, maybe killing you". This book explains everything with research about vitamin supplements. Its an excellent guide for peo´ple who know little about vitamins. They really work.
