The Stardust spacecraft used blocks of a very light foamed glass material called aerogel to capture particles from the tail of Comet Wild 2. As it passed through the tail of the comet, it uncovered the aerogel to collect dust from the tail. On its next pass by Earth, the spacecraft released a capsule containing the aerogel sample collectors, which parachuted down to Earth. Scientists are still studying the dust particles from this mission.

The Stardust spacecraft is still in orbit around the Sun , and is scheduled to visit Comet Tempel 1 in 2011 to image the impact crater made by the Deep Impact mission in 2005.
