We currently have a tax system that basically is tax rate by reproduction. Have more kids and pay no taxes. If a person has a fertility problem and needs to save the $40,000+ it costs to adopt they still have to pay far more in taxes then their peers who have no medical problems. I for one can't wait for this to be challenged as a constitutional issue. It is patently unfair to tax someone at a higher rate due to medical problems yet that is what is happening.

Just to clarify - I have no medical problems and have kids. I have a friend who cannot afford the huge cost of adoption while a co-worker of his pays thousands less in taxes every year.
If he were asked to pay more in taxes so that someone else could have kids I'm sure his answer would be no. Its also very childish of others to "demand" that someone else pay more in taxes because they "chose" to have kids.

not only should we penalize them on taxes for having more, like china does/did, but we should abolish the welfare system as we know it, it has been "overhauled" back in the 90's, they said it worked so the only ones left are those who are chronic we should make it mandatory to sterilize them while on welfare.

I think that if they could make it so that the tax money that they get back has to be used in the form of food stamps or some other fashion so people could not just have extra crap that they will not share with their kids, i think they would think twice about having kids in the first place.

P.S. I do not have any kids but allot of my friends do and they always use there tax's to spend on themselves and nothing go's to their children,,,,,Like it is there bonus for putting up with THEIR decision to have kids in the first place!!!!

It probably does seem like an unfair system to someone in your situation, and change should happen. But for those with a house full of kids, no it is just fine the way it is and they can't afford to pay any taxes. I'm sure, though, that they did not pro-create in order to avoid the tax man. I think you're a bit bitter because you can't have kids and I wish you luck in your efforts, but don't feel harshly at those of us who do. It's a bit childish isn't it?

There is an adoption credit someone can take if they spend $$$ to adopt a child.

"You may be able to take a tax credit for qualifying expenses paid to adopt an eligible child (including a child with special needs). The adoption credit is an amount subtracted from your tax liability. Although the credit generally is allowed for the year following the year in which the expenses are paid, a taxpayer who paid qualifying expenses in the current year for an adoption which became final in the current year, may be eligible to claim the credit on the current year return. The adoption credit is not available for any reimbursed expense. In addition to the credit, certain amounts reimbursed by your employer for qualifying adoption expenses may be excludable from your gross income. "
