It pinched a tiny bit when they put it in, but that only took a few seconds and then complete pain relieve. I highly recommend them. Had them with both deliveries.
They don't let you see the needle. I'm very afraid of needles, and I did OK.

They are wonderful. They hurt like Hell when they put it in, but that pain is so worth it because you know you are not going to have contractions anymore. The contractions don't really get bad until your water breaks and you are dilated to 5 or above the more you dilate the harder they are.
Once the epidural is in - I get the shakes for awhile, but then you can rest and you know when to push because you will feel pressure. I would actually tell them when the baby was ready and I needed to start. So, you do feel it, it just doesn't hurt - it is pressure pain. Then after they turn off the epidural and you start to get feeling back and then they will take it out of your back. I always run fever after - not sure why, but oh well.
Sometimes I still get tingling in my back for a couple seconds, even now. It is so worth it - I have a high pain tolerance, but there is no way I could deliver without it.
Good luck

If you have to go into it cold (like w/ a scheduled c-section) I imagine it's really scary. They give you a small shot that numbs the skin then put the epidural in. I was in full on labor when they did mine...the Dr. was having trouble getting it between my vertebrae, so he had to try 3 times. I did not feel it. What I did feel were the WICKED labor pains. If he had told me I needed to have the epidural put in my eyeball to stop the pain, I would have let him!!! Once he got the epidural in correctly, I felt nothing at all. It was good because I could calm down and pay attention to having the baby. I think w/o the epidural I would have just been rushing to get it over because of the pain and by not having the pain, I could pay attention and see the baby arrive, etc.

Let me tell you I have such a GREAT fear of needles that it is not even funny...I mean I am terrified. My nurse had even asked me if I was ready for my anesthesiologist to come give me my epidural I told her no then my mom pointed out that my contractions were only gonna get worse not better. So I told the nurse yes, but not wanting to do it at the same time....well lil did I know my pain doc was on call and not even in the freaking hospital so I was yelling and cryingg for him to get there.....well when he did I was cryin saying I couldn't do it well with two seconds it was done and I was IN-LOVE with him he was my new best friend...it made labor and delivery wonderful I could actually enjoy giving birth to my lil baby boy...not to mention they give you the epidural while you are having a contraction so believe me your mind will be worried about the needle but all you will feel is the contractions but not to worry that needle will make all your pain go away. Good luck and go with the epidural it is well worth the worry...cause it actually takes all the pain away.

Well when your labor is so painful you dont even care about a huge needle going into your back!! I had one and within 5 mins it is such a relief. However, I was so numb I couldnt feel anything. I felt like i couldnt "push" properly because of it. I ended up with a c sec, because I pushed for 2 1/2 hrs and my baby wouldnt descend. My Dr said it wasnt because of the epidural, but who knows. She was 8lbs 8oz and I am a really small woman. Next baby am attempting a VBAC with no epidural, (i might be crazy !!!) Anyways, good luck with labor and delivery.

I've had an epidural and and a spinal within 13 months of each other and both felt the same, like a bee sting in your back. It took a few minutes to become numb. I felt nothing from my waist down.

I had one with my son. They insert a needle into your spine that injects the anesthesia, when it is administered it makes your body jerk a bit kind of like you have been shocked (not to bad though but feels weird) within seconds you don't fell a thing! I mean nothing at all. I ended up having a c-section and they kept me awake for it just doped me up some more.
However after the birth of my child I had allot of pain in my lower back for months where the epidural had been administered but eventually did go away.
If I ever had a child again I would get another one!

Congratulations on your upcoming delivery. it rather is greater intense as you oftentimes have time to construct up the contractions, been triggered could make the contractions come speedier and greater better then spontaneous labour. you may desire to take it the way it comes in the previous leaping into an epidural. you would be fortunate and are waiting to handle the labour without an epidural, basically because of the fact its triggered does not recommend you will choose one. in case you have an epidural you would be bedridden and in case you attempt to permit labour progression as much as a hazard then you fairly could be responsive to you gave it one hundred% in the previous having the epidural. there are a number of approaches of inducing labour, working example there is the gel, it rather is synthetic sperm to melt the cervix. the drip which will carry contractions on sturdy and painful, breaking the waters it rather is the appropriate and closest to organic labour. make valuable your you be responsive to the way they are going to bring about you and have a delivery plan waiting. The advice on the thank you to hold forth labour for sure intercourse lots of intercourse, it fairly is going to soften the cervix and make it greater handy to dilate. I desire you each and every and all the very appropriate and desire labour runs comfortably for you. The discomfort is properly worth it no remember how undesirable it fairly is for the reason which you may desire to have it on the back of your thoughts as quickly as holding you perfect healthful new child infant. Congratulations and better of success.

I had an epidural with all three of my children and they are uncomfortable for all of about 5 min after that it is wonderful because you can rest and prepare for the real pain the actual labor...

if your doctor recommends it and you don't have any problems with your back now, I would highly recommend having one.

I had them with both of my kids and before I had the first one I was terrified but once the pain of the contractions gets to its worst I was ready! It did not hurt at all to me just a little pinch them a weird feeling when the big needle goes in but not pain. Then you lay down and with in 5 minutes I was pain free with a little button to push to increase the relife whenever I needed it! It was wonderful! But you must hold very still while they are inserting the needle that was the only part that scared me but it is easy once the time comes!!! I dafinatly recommend it ! Good Luck! And congradulations!
