In th UK there are strict rule on employment of children and limits on the number of hours you can work.
Paper rounds are the most common but a saturday job for a few hours should be ok as well. However as you are under 16 the minimum wage regulations do not apply.
The main (adult) rate applies to workers aged 22 and over and is currently £5.35 per hour.
The development rate is currently £4.45 an hour.
The development rate applies to 18 to 21-year-olds
The third rate applies to 16 to 17-year-old workers who are above school leaving age. It is currently £3.30

Well, it depends where you live. In Scotland, the rules are that you can have a paper round and do odd jobs at the age of 13, and can work if you get a permit from your local council. However, you can't work for more than 2 hours on a school night, and not before 7am or after 7pm. You can work more hours on a Saturday, sorry I don't know how many!
At 14, you can work on a Sunday as well, and the same rules apply for weekdays. You can work more on a Saturday though. During school time, up to 12 hours a week, during holidays you can work up to 25 hours.
Bear in mind however, that if you do work, you won't get paid the minimum wage as you're not 16, and shop owners can take advantage of this.
With regards to animals, most places won't employ you under the age of 16 due to their insurance policy. This applies mostly to large chains of shops, so some local places will employ you. Try local kennels and catterys, stables etc. Also ask local breeders if they'll pay you to clean out their cages/hutches, as you'll still be in contact with the animals, and you will probably have to do this in any job with animals anyway.
Like I said, some of this may not apply to you if you don't live in Scotland, check with your local council and see what their rules are. If you are in Scotland, check out the Young Scot page, www.youngscot.org.uk as this has legal advice on it somewhere! Good luck and persevere.

Hi Katie B,
You can do 'light work' from the age of 14, and helping in a pet shop would count as that. If you are 13, you're only supposed to do 'odd jobs' or a paper round.
See the advice page below, as there are rules about how many hours you may work, how often you should be allowed to have a break and the minimum wage. Good luck in your wonderful career.

My state (MI) doesn't allow 13 yr olds to work (outside of a family business). 14 & 15 yr olds may work. You MUST get a work permit filled out by the employer and filed appropriately. You'd only be allowed to work between certain hours and the max number of hours you work is very low, something like 8, I believe. At 16, it goes up and is less strict.
I don't know about pet shops, many companies don't hire under 16 because of the extremely strict rules, it becomes more of a hassle than it's worth. My sisters worked at Kroger as baggers at 14 or 15, but the Kroger by us no longer has baggers. Good luck.

Yup, if you are lucky enough to find the right place you can.
My friend works as a kennel hand and she started there when she was 13. I would probably go for somewhere like a kennels or a rescue place rather than a shop as they are more picky and more likely to want someone older (irritating as it is - there should be more jobs for people under 18)
Good luck!
