Depends on the car, and how well the screen was fitted, that is does it have any locked in stress from being forced into place. Old Vauxhall cars in the 50s had the reputation of screens breaking if car was jacked up with the front door open (body twisting), and my Rover 216 screen would crack if anyone sneezed nearby. No problems with next two cars though.

Windscreens are very tough, but often have hidden stresses from being badly fitted, the bodywork being twisted, stone chips etc. and then they can go at the slightest provocation.

Mine went recently when I shut the door! Sudden bang and a big crack, the fitter found a stone chip had started it and the slam of the door finished it.

It really depends on what hits it and at what angle. Hitting the inside will always break it easier as the screen curves out the way. I've hit cars in scrapyards with hammers and failed to crack them but have had a wiper arm tap the screen and cause a side-to-side fracture.
