Ok a previous post on here prompted me to do this but I can't help wondering why people go out of their way to give their children the most peculiar names when they're born! It doesn't make me stand up in astonishment to hear some fishwife screaming in the street for her daughter named 'Porsche or Fairy-Lou' to get back here right now!!!! It makes me shake my head in dis-belief!
Why do you think people do it? Unintelligence? To shock? or generally because they think their child will have better chance of getting famous LOL

Fairy Lou? That's unreal! Why would they name a child something like that? Unintelligence? To shock? Maybe it's SHOCKING UNINTELLIGENCE! Or maybe it's family tradition?

I agree with you, it amazes me that people call their child after a town or a city street, or even a fruit. Some use a hybrid which is worse.
Christian names were handed down in the same way as surnames, perhaps this is why so many children have no identity now.

Actually, Portia (not Porsche, the car) is a perfectly acceptable name.
If you want to hear really funny names, I went to high school with a girl named Tarantula and my son went to pre-school with a brother and sister named LaDoctor and LaNursa.

" It`s becoming hard to be someone, but it all works out", John Lennon. Meanwhile an absurd name ensures attention and even if poorly educated, that child will still have something that no other person has, or wants, a daft name. Yours Truly, Osweego Narbert Ramdang-Tibble, esquire.

Porsche is a name found in Shakespear as is Mercedes.
I think Elizabeth is a stupid name as is Jack and Stacy and Thomas.
Gee, I guess its a personal preference.

Don't worry about someone's name! I don't have a problem with a name I can pronounce. WHen it comes down to the Indian and Asian names thats where I get stuck. Be nice!

I think that sometimes they create names that are mixtures of something important to the parents. Other times, they just want to make their kid stand out.

Well, it akes them stand out, imgine in school they'll be like a million "jacks" "toms" "emilys" and "joes"
Calling them an unusual name makes them stand out from the crowd as theyre less common
To be honest i love unusual names much better than emily any day!

Maybe they think it will toughen their children up since they'll have to fight their way out of grammar school?
