The last I played was on a gameboy with red, yellow, and blue. I now have a DS and would like to know what game I should get in order to catch up.

well, i'd skip gold/silver and crystal. don't get me wrong, those games were great, but there were bugs in them that caused the next generation to be incompatible

i would go with fire red, or leaf green, they'll be familiar, because they are essentially the same game, just that it's updated to include modern things, such as hold items, personalities, double battles, etc..

after you beat the elite four, you have access to other modern things, like friendship evolution, breeding, and pokemon beyond the original 151 of red, blue and yellow

Well, Pokemon Ranger is currently out if you're willing to try something new. The next games that you play as a trainer are called Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl. They come out on April 22. Or you could always go buy one of the newer advanced games; some of them are still out.
