I would go for the Octavia, these things are very well put together, the 1.9 TDI is a very economical reliable engine.

Skoda are now owned by Volkswagen and are now considered very good. You will get more for your money with Skoda and with the reliability of Volkswagen it is probably the better buy.
However they do up grade the models quicker than Ford as they started off as imitation Passats and Golfs.
Neither car has any bad faults.
Have you looked at the Renault Laguna?

the mondeo is a ford...
the skoda, whilst better than the ford, isnt much better
and the fabia is a rebadged tractor...

but a 2000 volvo diesel V70... it very affordable and youll see 300000 miles on the clock before the engine needs any work on it, and the body has a 25 yr anti corrosion treatment.. mine is 20 yrs old, its lived outside all its life and theres more rust on my neighbours granada scorpio.. which is also newer...
