I'm 19 weeks pregnant and since I found out where babies come from I've had one prevalent fear... that I would have a child like my uncle or aunt who both suffer from mental handicaps. My aunt has autism and my uncle suffers from cerebral palsy both of them consume a large amount of pills per day and are physically drainning to deal with. I want to get over this fear it's been so strong that I considered for a long time never getting pregnant at all. How practical is this fear? What are the chances my child will suffer from a mental handicap?

I worried about the same things when I was pregnant...its normal for everyone. I happen to have had a severely disabled child and can tell you that I wouldn't trade her in for the world. She has been a huge positive in my life. But the chances your child will have a handicap are very, very low. CP is not hereditary and autism is thought to be only mildly hereditary. #s are up because children with mild versions are being diagnosed. So enjoy your pregnancy and try to stop worrying because it doesn't help in any way.

If your child were born with a handicap, would you love it any less? The best thing you can do now is get the best prenatal care you can, and take extra good care of yourself. What will happen will happen, you can't worry about it.

Talk to your OB about your medical history. If there is a chance of complication with your baby you'll be better off if you can research ahead of time. No matter what, your child will be a source of love for you and your family.

Best of luck to you.

Your odds are high, did your doctor not do what is called a Quad screening test. This is where they check for birth defects and spina bifa and nueral tube defect......if your baby has birth defects the doctor will then ask you if you to abort the baby and that decision is up to you. But talk to your doctor if they have not done the Quad screening test.

Talk to your Dr. about the risks of this happening. Just because your aunt and uncle have something wrong doesn't mean it is hereditary. Talk to your Dr. about your concerns and the chances of it happening.

Your doctors can do tests for things like that, just by drawing a little blood from you. Talk to your doctor about your fear and explain where it comes from

talk to your doctor....he/she is going to be the best person to tell because he/she will know the chances of anything happening and the best ways to care for your baby.....he can't help you if don't let him know your concerns
