Within 1 week I went from 0% effaced and 1 1/2cm at my dr.'s appt. to 50% effaced and 2 cm at the next one. I have had painless contractions for a couple of days. This is my second baby. The contractions have to be doing something because my cervix is thinning and dilating. My cervix is still thinning because I have had clear mucus discharge all day. I don't think it's the rest of my plug, but I could be wrong. I think I'll make my husband have sex with me to night jjust to get things moving. Hopefully have some pain in my contractions.

Just wondering if it's possible to have painless contractions? Concodering mine are actually changing my cervix!

Thanks for your input!

My contractions weren't painful at first with my first pregnancy.

Yes you can get painless contractions, and yes they can change the size of your cervix. Most of the time, however, they are harmless "practice" contractions that you can have. My mother when she was pregnant with me had these 'Braxton Hix' as they are more formally known and started dialating at a very early stage. You never mentioned how far along you are although I am assuming it is very near 40 weeks? (36-40wks) They say that 2nd (and 3rd and 4th and so on....) pregnancies go much quicker than the first, so this makes sense that you are dialating without much pain, and quickly.

i can say i was fortunate enough to not feel any contractions until i was 8 1/2 centimeters dialated.and even then it wasn't to bad.at least not what everyone talked about.they actually said if i wanted an epidural i would have to get it then or not at all..i opted for it since it was my 1st pregnancy and i didn't know what to expect..but my personal experiance yes i had painless contractions up until 8 1/2 cent. and then a little pain..i too was surprised at the doctors office to be dialated and 70% effaced and not even know i had even had a contraction.. hopefully if i decide to get pregnant again..i can be lucky once again...good luck

I dont know about painless contractions but that would be awesome! With my first pregnancy, I had all BACK labor, this meant everytime I had a contraction, it just felt like a bad backache and was actually quite manageable and not really all that uncomfortable so maybe you are having this? The second one I was not so lucky and got to feel what contractions are all about and I prefer back labor any day. I don't know why I had one with back labor and one without, but the back labor was a breeze, no drugs, no epidural, no crying, nothing!

I was in labor all day with my son and had no idea. I had what I thought were braxton hicks contractions, felt like period cramps. Something told me to go to the hospital and when I did they told me I was in labor.

'No I'm not' I said.

'You've been in labor all day' The nurse said

'No I haven't' I said

'You're having a contraction right now' The nurse said

'No I'm not' I said

And then I looked at that screen. Low and behold I was having a contraction. I fell asleep, woke up the next day, had a c-section because of placenta previa and woke up a mother.

Yes, painless contractions are rare but possible.

It has been my experience that childbirth is different for everyone...I had minor discomfort at 12:30 am and by the time I got to the hospital at 1:45 I was at 10 and she was out 10 minutes later......I clearly had contractions during the day that I didn't feel.....of course, I had a bit of black & blue cohosh tea so that may have sped things along too. Sex and nipple stimulation are all great things to do to get things moving....although after 4 kids I realize that the baby will come when he or she is good and ready - no matter what you do. Congratulations ~ : )

I did! With all three of mine. I had all my children premature 32,33,34. With the last two my doctor asked me at 28 weeks if i had felt any contractions I said no because I hadn't even felt the slightest tightening. he put me on the monitor for 1 hour, turns out I was having contractions every 5 minutes. I didn't even feel them. I could see them on the monitor. So yes you could have painless contractions.

I think that once you start hard labor you will have contractions but you never know. When I was pregnant I did not even know about it until I went to the hospital the next day.they told me that I should have been there the night before.By the time they admitted me it was too late for medication and I gave birth without anything.I was so surprised about how well I did.But I do remember the contractions.I guess it all how you handle it.Good luck and congratulations.

DON'T HAVE SEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you are already dilating, having sex can cause infections. I am 32 weeks and have started dilating and i am not allowed to have any contact with semen, or even "play" as an orgasm can cause the uterus to contract..

They call the "painless contractions" braxton hix, although I am going through the same thing as you, where they're obviously doing something, its just very slow.
