Probably because he wasn't going to resign with them at the end of the year so they traded him to get something instead of losing him to free agency and getting nothing.

Yeah. I'm a diehard Oilers fan. I thought they would be making a push for the playoffs but without Smitty it dowsn't look like it. They may resign Smyth in the off-season but I can imagine alot of other teams will want him. Ryan Smyth is great, his loss wiil hurt the Oilers. It is a sad day for Oilers fans. :(

I'm excited the isles go Smyth but u guys did essentially get to 1st rd draft picks in O'Marra and our 2007 pick. Plus Nilsson is a pretty decent player. Without a doubt our best prospect in the ahl!! The oilers could turn around and sign him again next year. Sounds to me like u did pretty good.

They're not making the playoffs and Smyth wants to test the free agent market this summer. The Oilers get prospects and a 1st rounder and Smyth gets to make a playoff push on the Island AND doesn't have to endure watching Messier cry his eyes out for 2 hours tonight.
Everybody wins!

The edmonton oilers traded Ryan Smyth because the oilers are dumb and dont know how to play hockey........if i were a gm i would never trade my best player.......and when i say MY best player that always doesnt mean the player is good**cough, cough**

This is a dumb trade. When they were talking to Ryan's agent he said that the trade talks broke down at the last 20 mintues before the deadline. I don't think they got all that they could have for him. Don't get me wrong these new players might be good, but isn't Ryan worth more than that. It is all talk about money and how he wanted 5.5 million in the next year and Lowe wasn't going to give it to him because it was too much money, but they are going to pay Hemsky 5 million in the last year of his contract, Roloson will get 4 million, Yeah sure those comtracts were just signed last summer and for 4 years. To me that is saying Hemsky is going to be a better player than Ryan in the next 4 years.(what happens if he get hurt in the next couple of years). I just don't think they got all that they coould have for him. He is too good of a player to be given away. That is my opinion.

In reguards to oilers hockey....lets back up to this past summer! the oilers traded pronger to the ducks ... from what i understand toronto was offering thomas kaberle a bonafide powerplay specialist that could potetialy relace progs and another player or draft picks ...i understand klowe was rushed but come on why trade pronger to your tuffest competion in the west the ducks who we narrowly beat in last years conf final for lupol which is a one hit wonder so what he scored 4 goals in a playoff game!...now because we get lupol we still need a top dman and lowe and behold we dont get him..! now the present ....lets trade our best player who Should be captian... for more Prospect forwords when we Still need a bonafide top d-man.. at least trade Ryan for Mattias norstrom or another avaliable top dman but nooo... poor smytty al his hard work down the drain in longisland i hope he doesnt come back klowe doesnt deserve him ....Good Luck Ryan Smith.....

The Oil know they are likely not gonna make the Playoffs - might as well let Smitty go instead of losing him in the off season.

I think it was a good deal all around..Edmonton is a small market team and probably would have a hard time resigning him
