LOL to the above poster. haha but seriously this question is really weird. I have seen a dead person (funerals, highway accident) but never rotted enough to have a smell and of course at a funeral they are made to smell nice.

It depends on where you see them.

In a funeral home - they smell like formaldehyde, the chemical used to embalm a body. It smells somewhat offensive to me, but I have an acute sense of smell.

Otherwise, if you come across a body that has been dead for a week or so, the decomposing body will smell similar to rotting meat. It has a sickingly sweet (not morbid, but literally) smell of death. It can get quite putrid. Did you ever smell an animal that had been hit by a car and left on the roadside? Yeah, like that.

EDIT
Jennifer, sorry for your loss, but I do not think it is disrespectful to ask the question. I have lost all 4 of my grandparents and a few friends. It is what it is. Someone wanted to know...and asking questions is how we continue to learn. Who knows? Maybe she will become a forensic scientist one day?

I've never seen a dead person and I don't think I want to. And they probably smell bad. Well actually it depends on how long they've been dead. Like if they just died they would probably smell like a person who's alive, but If they've been dead for months they would probably have a really bad stench to them.

When I was in junior high my friend and I found a dead body. The guy fell off a roof and broke his neck on the fence. He had only been there for a couple of hours so he didn't smell at all. Its definitely not something I will ever forget.

it is something you dont want to see to often in your life time.
if you love some one and they were a big part of your life or close friend and then too see them motionless and still makes any person humble. and that is when the fear sets in life is only leant to us and we should do as much as we can with what time we have left.
smell well that depends you can imagine what your garbage can smell like after the rains and then sun comes out x that by 10 that is if the body has not been treated.
