It was started for four main reasons:

Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism.

Militarism was the building of weapons and armies by nations in case of war. Alliances were made by many countries in Europe. Imperialism was expanding on one country's land. And nationalism was a strong pride in one's country.

After the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Soon, however, with all of the alliances, other nations began involved until it became a massive conflict. Mostly it was Germany (Axis) vs. Britain, France, and Russia (Allies), but there were many other countries involved.

Francis Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian-Hungary throne, while traveling through Sarajevo, was assassinated by Gavrilo Principe, on June 28 1914, who was in a 'gang' called the Black Hands. Although this didn't happen in Serbia the Austrian Hungarians held them accountable. Austrian foreign minister Leopold Berchtold sent an envoy on July 5 to Germany emperor William 2 to ask for his support. He was going on a cruise and told him go ahead he had full support of whatever he wanted to do. Austria- Hungary thought this meant war. Austria- Hungary gave Serbia an ultimatum, Let us find people of this gang or war. This ultimatum was impossible to accept. This angered Austria Hungary and they declared war on July 28 1914. both countries began to mobilize. News of this spread throughout Europe and the allies of the countries also prepared for war. The central powers were Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and Ottoman empire. The Allied powers were Ireland, Great Britain France, Italy, Greece, Albania, Serbia, Romania, and Russia.

Because the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated which caused a domino affect as Axis and Allied forces joined the war because of alliances with other countries.
