Hi, all.

Recently I noticed, that 'attached' in the crook of one of my fishtank decor pieces, is a strange object. It looks like a pink piece of the fishfood (flakes) but it is surrounded by a white layer. It almost looks like mold, but I didn't think with the filter and the algae killer it could get moldy food.

Could it be eggs? I have 8 neon tetra and 1 little catfish. If it is moldy food I will vaccuum it up but if it is eggs, I want to leave it.

This sounds like a fungus growing on a piece of food to me (especially if you use pink/orange flake food). The fungus is probably Saprolegnia or Achlea, both of which are common in aquaria. It doesn't harm your fish or attack them directly, but if they have an injury, it can grow on the injured area. Don't bother to treat your tank, because it will just come back - and it really isn't a problem itself. The food would only have to have been in the tank about 24-36 hrs. for it to grow. (and if anyone reading this doesn't think it's in their tank, get a small container of your tank water, put in a sesame seed, amd wait two days!)

If you want to compare what you have to a photo, look at this link: http://www.visualsunlimited.com/images/watermarked/227/227311.jpg

The fungus in the photo is growing on a dead bug. This is about 2 days' worth of growth - what you see may be thicker or longer depending on how long the food was in the tank.

Definetly not eggs of any of the fish you have. Neons are egg scatterers, the catfish needs a partner in order to be able to lay eggs. I would remove it.

This sounds like an over feeding problem. If you find that food is left over after you feed, give a little less. When food sits around to long fungus will grow on it.
