Eisenhower sent the first military advisers to Vietnam in 1958. The USA didn't have combat troops in Vietnam until 1964. Do a search on "the pentagon papers" and you can learn more.

The Vietnam war started in 1945, shortly after the Japanese lost WWII.

During WWII, the Japanese overran and occupied what is now Vietnam, as well as China (Vietnam had been a French colony) in 1941, shortly after France was defeated by Germany. In that year, the Viet Minh began as an opposition force against the Japanese, but they didn't have a lot of success, even though they received money and weapons from the US, since they were fighting our common enemy the Japs.

After the Japanese surrendered in 1945, they turned nominal control of Vietnam over to the Viet Minh, but France wanted their colony back. Since the Viet Minh really didn't have the resources to run the country, they agreed, on condition that France ease up on some of its colonial restrictions on the rights of the Vietnamese people.

So they let the French back in. France soon reneged on its promise to give more freedom to the Vietnamese, and the war was on.

I assume your speaking of Vietnam, and if so, it began around 61, and 62. Kennedy began sending troops ( secretly) to Vietnam. After he got his head blown off Johnson continued to send troops but lied to the American people about it. Letters were comieing back to family mambers here in America telling their loved ones they were in a place called Vietnam, but wasn't suppose to tell anyone and they had no idea where it was. It began for us when France gave up on trying to keep the south Vietnam from being overtaken by communist North. Kennedys hatred for communism was why we moved in when France moved out. They were there 25 years and seen no end the same as America. Nixon took office and dropped everything from agent orange to kill of the jungle to tons of bombs , to no avail. These people only knew war and they had gotten good at it.
